Where can I buy/adopt purebred cats?

Topics: Cat Breeds | 8 Comments »By admin | March 11, 2010

I’m looking to buy/adopt a purebred kitten; most preferably a Norwegian Forest Cat. I will eventually go to the animal shelters in the area, but i’d rather do some online research first. Can anyone recommend some websites for cat breeders in the NY/NJ area, or other websites like petfinder that would have breeds by category?

the local newspaper classifieds section will have purebred kittens. Just make sure you check the paper weekly.

call a rescue organization in your local area. search on-line for breeds that you like, research them, and then call the breed rescue for your breed of choice. Make sure that you are knowledgeable about the breed and it’s pros/cons before adopting it. And also if you can, rescue an animal…too many unloved pets out there.

You can use the link below to search for any breeds in the CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association) breeder referral. You can refine the search to specific breeds and states. You could also do a Google search for Norwegian Forest Cat breeders, and will probably get a decent list.

You are very unlikely to find a purebred kitten in a shelter, especially a “Wegie” (Norwegian Forest Cat) which is a relatively rare breed. Like purebred puppies, purebred kittens are usually purchased directly from breeders, who usually also provide a lot of guidance in how to care for them and “hand-holding” as needed while you’re transitioning your new kitten into your household.

However, it is easy to find breeders in your area. Two places to look are on the CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association) website, http://www.cfa.org, and on the Fanciers Breeder Referral List, http://www.breedlist.com. Both sites have several different search options and will let you look for specific breeds, within a specific area, or in several other ways. In addition, the CFA site has an excellent writeup on Norwegian Forest Cats in the “Breeds and Colors” section.
