My cairn terrier is super fast and takes off outside if she gets the chance. We have to chase her down a lot and i’m tired of it. She’s a pain to walk. Can anyone tell me how i can train her not to run off? Shock collars are very expensive.

First you might want to put her on a leash. And when you want her to run off, make sure it’s a fenced area. Carry treats around so you can get her back.

don’t go the shock collar route, not very humane and can cause permenent damnage.
go to the carin terrier web site. they tell you a lot about them so much i was going to get one but after i read the info on the sire about the dog requiring a fenced in yard, that i have, but also to be really safe a run cause they dig like crazy too…and to top it off, it said they are kinda like cats when it comes to affection, you can pet me when i want you to pet me.
since i already had cats, i decided to get a toy poodle…best idea i eer had. totally devoted, won’t leave my side.
so good luck, if you can’t fence in the yard, put up a run so you can fasten the dog inside the house and when you open the door he’s all hooked up to the lead. let em run

in the wild, dogs claim things such as food and toys by asking other dogs for space and if they come too close, they bite. claim the door by standing tall and block the door and correct her if she tries to run through. get your finger to act like teeeth on another dog and touch the side of her neck for a corretion. once she leaves the door and surrenders then you can practise having the door open when shes around.
as for the walk, but a choke collar or rope and put it right at the top of the neck, where you get the most controll. make sure she is calm the entire time, it might take a while. she must be calm, putting on the collar, lead going to the door, make her sit at the door and correct her if she tries to leave before you, use a quick tug on the leash and then release. make her follow you as you leave, making you the pack leader and her the follower. use the simple leash correchion along with a stern ‘no!’ if she walks in front of you or pulls. if you correct her more than 3 times tap her on the bum with your foot and she will hopefull spin round and you will have corrected her.
watch the dog whisperer on national geographic channel!
stay calm and assertive!

A Cairn learn not to run off? Takes A LOT of training. Find a professional training facility in your area that has experience with small terriers. Teaching her to walk nicely on a leash is pretty easy but teaching her to not run off when she’s off leash will be a real challenge because any time she’s sees a little varmint, she’ll think it’s fair game and go. Out of my 20+ Cairns I’ve had over the years, only 5 could be trusted off leash outside. Do not use a shock collar without some professional guidance on its proper usage.
