GIANT schnauzer problems!!!?

Topics: Dog Breeds | 5 Comments »By admin | March 7, 2010

I have a 9 month old giant schnauzer. already weighing around 75 pounds. I am gone at school about 7 hours every day. Usually when i was gone, we would keep him locked in our pretty large laundry room with a baby gate, and everyday when i got home i would run him with my bike. haha for about 2 miles. (literally). It seemed to working fine i guess. he was still extremely hyper though. But since he’s grown to be bigger, he’s learned how to get out of the babygate and tear up the house. Even when i run him now days, its not enough. Im pretty sure he has seperation anxiety because he HAS to be around me at all times. his behavior problems are an issue also.
ALL IN ALL. its dangerous. last time he escaped he turned the blowdryer on and almost burnt the house down. dont ask how because i have nooooo earthly idea
nooo. i have a kennel. i place hes staying in is probably a 10 by 6 foot laundry room closed in by a baby gate. im afraid to put him in the kennel because its smaller than that

Use a kennel. An extra large made for big dogs! Forget a baby gate with this big of a dog. He shouldn’t be confined that long. If there is any way you could run home for lunch or have friend stop by and let him outside for 15 minutes. Give him a treat. Then re-kennel him and leave without a word said.

He is STILL a puppy!!!! He is going to be hyper! If there is any way to take him for a quick walk BEFORE going to work that would be great.

Another option is puppy day care if you can afford it.

He’s letting you know he needs more exercise. You said he’s still “extremely hyper” after his 2 mile run. He’s clearly showing his frustration. He needs more exercise, obedience classes both for very, very important socializing as well as the training he’ll get.

This puppy is very bored and frustrated – that’s at the root of his behaviour problems. Puppies need more than one run a day and then be left alone the rest of the day. His mind needs exercise too – train him.

OMG!! Your doggie has some real issues! He is very young and need companionship. Of course he is a active 4legged child. I have some options.

    1. You can consider having an door installed into the laundry room.
    2. Put him in the bathroom but puppy proof it first.
    3. Doggie daycare
    4. Hire someone who lives near by who can come check on him and walk him daily.
    5. Just puppy proof the whole house/apartment. And start leaving him alone loose. Have a camera that is broadcasting to another location so you can see his behavior, something like a nanny cam.
    6. Get a kennel.

Your dog needs more than the 2 miles and young giants get very frustrated being crated that much. Is there a doggie day care you can take him to a couple of days a week? And don’t be afraid to kennel him. We got a rescue that age and she chewed up 2 x 4’s for recreation. She ran for several hours a day because we think she was kenneled for long times. If he doesn’t destroy them, try the black kongs and you can stuff them with treats and he can entertain himself with those. Obedience classes would help but day care is about the best. Doesn’t have to be every day, but at least twice a week. Join a yahoo group about giant schnauzers and get some help that way. Some are very helpful. A walk before work or throwing a ball for 20 minutes would also help. And if someone can come home in the middle of the day. There are dog walkers who can pick them up in the middle of the day.
