Walk him until he calms down, 2 or 3 times a day. Be careful not to over-exercise him as a pup as you could risk damaging his joints. When he’s an adult a good rule of thumb is to walk him until he gets tired and starts looking to head for home, two or three times a day.

It all depends on your walking speed, the individual dog, the terrain etc- a slow walker on level ground with an exciteable adult will have to walk for a lot longer than a fast walker going up a hill with a pup or a calm adult.

    Ummmm, that’s not a breed.

But what you were told sounds good to me and then you can probably walk him once a day for an hour.

I don’t know about the 20 minute walk. You don’t want to overstress those growing joints in his legs. Pavement/concrete/hard surfaces are hard on them.

I agree with the 2 10 minute walks. So continue those, and maybe add in a play session (on grass/dirt) to tire him out.

Akitas mature when they are about 2.5 years old. Walking him once he is over a year is good for him – a couple 20 minute walks a day should be fine. Play with him too – they are very interactive and bond with their owners. They do not like to be left alone.

3 walks a day sounds about right. He should have no problem going for three 30 minute walks a day. You can use the time on his walks to train and socialize him. I would also recommend you start taking him to dog parks asap, so he can start socializing with other dogs.

A little more on the Akita’s character and training needs…
Generally, Akita Inus are very docile animals, but they can be a bit unpredictable in certain circumstances if not properly trained by a dominate figure. They are very gentle, kind, and faithful, and they need companionship. While Akita Inus can be aggressive towards other dogs and hesitant to accept strangers, they make excellent guard dogs and usually good with children in their family. Members of the family should treat this breed with respect and thoughtfulness. When teased, some Akitas, but not all, are capable of an erratic response, including biting if not socialized. It is important to properly socialize and Akita from birth with as many other breeds and people as possible in order to avoid this type of behavior. Akita Inus need firm training early on to prevent the onset of disobedience or over-independent behavior. With firm training and proper socialization, an Akita will be as gentle and loving as any other breed.
