Is it ok to feed my Bullmastiff regular food instead of dog food?

Topics: Dog Breeds | 18 Comments »By admin | March 10, 2010

So I have an 11 week old Bullmastiff and I want to cook food for him instead of give him dog food. What do you think would be best for him? I want him to be healthy and strong.

honestly your best bet is to feed him dogfood. Its made for their nutritional needs. Feeding animal human food can give them Acute Panckrentitis.. because of the fat in the food. (my poodle got that and almost died) and being only 11 weeks I would Highly advise not giveing him human food unless its a small treat.

i think that puppy chow is better for him.

Because feeding him regular food can upset his stomach and not give him the right essencial vitamins, which a puppie needs despertly to grow up nice and strong.

Plus most human food can make the puppie choke and throw up.
Sometimes they can kill the pup.

So I really advise you to use puppy chow or dog food so he can get the vitamins he needs.

If you want to transition to an all-homemade diet, put a little less kibble and a little more cooked food in your dog’s bowl each night over the course of a week.

Unless you do the research for the Raw dieat
( http://www.dogguide.net/raw-diet-basics.php ) – Your better off getting him on a good puppy food.
Innova, Evo, Blue Buffalo, Taste of the Wild and Canidae are all really great foods.
Avoid ANYTHING with corn in it.

no you cant but you can feed him apples and carrots it is okay for your dog but not too much and i would only prefer you giving him only his dog food.

Honestly a growing puppy coming off of the mothers mile still needs the basic nutrition to grow and develope properly. without the nutrtion from dog food a lot of complications can develope. all of the dogs senses are still developing until around 2 to 3 years of age. The lack of nutrition can effect eye sight, hearing, bone development,teeth,etc.. so honestly the best thing for a dog is dog food NO doubt

It’s never ever ever OK to give a dog “people” food, but there are many cooked and raw diets other than dog food that are healthy. For now I would stick to his regular dog food, then research diets like the BARF diet (it’s an abbreviation). Once you have found a diet that is suitable for you and your dog, wean him off gradually by feeding him small treats or bits of cooked plain meats (or whatever the new diet calls for) occasionally. There’s no one best diet for a dog, but you can do plenty of research and ask your veterinarian. I think commercial dog foods are just fine, and can produce extremely hardy, healthy dogs that live a long, comfortable life.

You can give your dog human food but not a lot cause will cause diarrhea and if you give your dog human food all the time it will be very unhealthy. I had a friend who feed his dog human food 24/7 and he got really sick then he started feeding him dog food but he didn’t make it. So basically what im saying is human food is ok like for treats but not for dinner.

but if your doing it because of the bad stuff in dog food, there all alternatives. Purina and ol roy aren’t the only dog foods on the planet. I have grown to love and trust Wellness all natural pet food line. I feed Chocolate their CORE reduced fat kibble, well bites, wellbars, and their canned food. he scarfs down every bite and it’s human grade. And he’s so healthy and vibrant at 9 years old. I wouldn’t risk him lacking proper nutrition by homecooking. just feed him a good all natural kibble and canned dog food with human grade stuff, PLUS the nutrients he needs.

Feed your puppy a really good Puppy food till he’s at least 3 yrs old (cuz they’re big dogs) but I wouldn’t try to feed him human food -you probably won’t be able to give him all the nutrients he needs to grow correctly.

Cooking isn’t so good since it kills the enzymes in the meat and destroys the nutrients. Feed your dog a raw diet of 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, 10% organ meat. They don’t need grains, fruits, or veggies. This diet is really easy too because you just figure out how much they need and give it to them, no cooking or grinding or mixing. Just make sure to do some research on it so you’re giving your puppy everything he needs. Feeding raw is cheaper in the long run per day and over all with reduced vet bills. Cheaper is always a good thing with a mastiff especially when it’s Superior quality to any premade food you can buy.

it depends upon how much you know of his needs dog food is also made from raw material we eat mostly but it is the proportion that matters
dogs cannot take too much of fat it causes pancreatitis they need more of some vitamins and minerals too at young age for proper growth

intially feed on dog food for 1-2yrs and then there will be less changes in proportions than now and you can feed home made dog food
but donot feed what you eat

Its fine if you do your research on how to properly prepare and balance meals for your dog.

Dogs require a meat-based diet. They get little to no nutrition from grains, fruits and veggies.

There are some groups on yahoo regarding raw feeding (prey model and BARF) as well as home-cooked meals. I highly suggest you join a few of them and do some research there.

Personally, if you’re going to give him people food, do some research on RAW (http://www.vetinfo.com/raw-dog-food-diet.html) or BARF (http://www.barfworld.com/) diets. Cooked human food (so long as it’s not seasoned as it would be for a human) is okay, but cooking it strips a lot of the nutrients in the food that your dog needs. Since he’s only 11 weeks old, I’d keep him on a good quality kibble for now. The brands listed by an above responder are good foods to look into. Also, never EVER give him cooked bones. Raw bones are fine for the most part (although I would recommend waiting until he’s older for any type of bones), however cooked bones become more brittle during the cooking process and can splinter easier. Raw bones are more pliable and generally do not splinter or break off as a cooked bone would.

For the record, contrary to common recommendations, don’t put him on a food specifically for large breeds. This can actually have serious side effects later in life for giant breeds such as mastiffs, including joint issues, as it can cause their joints to grow too quickly due to the calories, etc… in the food. Regular puppy chow (or even regular adult formulas) will be just fine for him. Here’s some good information on how to properly feed a giant breed puppy

I homecook for my dog and have been doing so for almost 2 years and if you research it you will find that homecooking, if done correctly, is far better than feeding kibble

dog food is human food, that has been overprocessed. Plus even with the better dog foods all the supplements that go into the food come from china

here are a couple of websites that might help you. If you do not use raw bones, you will need to add calcium. I use eggshell calcium that i order.

You can not control the amount of nutrients your puppy requires by giving him a homemade diet. Best to stick with a good premium dog kibble, such as Natural Balance. You don’t even have to switch from puppy to adult with the brand of food. Its good for all stages
