Is the Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute a good guard dog?

I know they’re different breeds. Are these dogs good for guarding a house? Just barking or howling or whatever when they see or smell something strange, no violent behaviour.

No. They aren’t bred to guard. They would rather welcome a stranger into your home. Also, Huskies are prone to running, so if you get one, make sure that it’s either securely in a backyard, inside your home, or on a lead for walks and such. Better guard dogs would be herding dogs or mastiff-like dogs.

Most dogs will defend their territory enough to at least bark when they hear abnormal noises outside.
We’ve got a Siberian Husky, and both he and our Labrador will alert us when someone’s at the door, or they hear a similar noise.

Well it depends. Either would be a good guard dog. It depends on how you train and treat the dog.

Any dog no matter what the breed is, or how big or small the dog is; they will guard the home by instinct alone. They do this because it is their territory, and also to protect you; they see you as a part of the pack. You do not have to train a dog to guard the house, again this is natural instinct. However, you should take your pup/dog to obedience classes, and be sure to keep him/her well socialized. Also, get your dog his/her Good Canine Citizen certificate.

No not generally, they do not bark and do not tend to react towards strangers. If you are attacked, im sure your dog would come to your rescue but i would think they would have to be trained to.

Not really. They basically are the same type of breeds – both are used for sled dogs. They may alert you to someone at the door but probably would not attack.

Siberian Huskies do not bark–that’s the good news. Here’s the bad: they do enjoy howling, which can be very frustrating for your neighbors. Unless you have a properly trained and well-exercised Siberian Husky, they do not make ideal pets for apartments.
Another caution: although Huskies are adored for being friendly and gentle, they make lousy watchdogs. Unfortunately, they are not overly suspicious of strangers, including burglars. The fact is that they tend to love everybody.
while,
Alaskan Malamutes will win you over with their playful, outgoing dispositions. They greet everyone as a friend–even strangers and first-time houseguests–so they don’t make good watchdogs, but they are extremely loyal to their family and friends. Malamutes are pack animals, and they enjoy spending time with their human pack, insisting on being included in all activities that their family undertakes. They’re not big-time barkers, but they do howl and they’re known for making a characteristic “woo woo” sound.

I don`t think so because Huskys and Alaskan Malamutes are very friendly dogs and would rather invite and lick then to bark, but Huskys do like to run and if you train maybe a Husky could be a guard dog…maybe.

I am an owner and breeder of Alaskan Malamutes and they are not considered to be a guard dog. They may be a “visual” deterrent due to their size and stature, but they tend to be more of a people dog.
It is often said that a Mally is more likely to invite in a robber, help them pack and them help them haul away the gear!
Hope that all helps.
