What is the typical life span of an Akita?

I have a 3/4 Akita male, he’s over 12 years old now. I figure he is way up there in years, I’ve been told that 8 to 10 years is typical. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge?

About 10 to 12 years. It depends on the individual dog and how healthy he is.

10-12 years is the average, but you said he is 3/4, so whatever the 1/4 may be the reason he is living longer.

big dogs usually don’t live as long as small ones…so a 12 yr old Akita is pretty old…but thats good, it means you’ve been a good dog parent.

If he is the size of an Akita then yes, he is getting up there in years.
I had one Purebred Akita live to be 10 years old.
My current Purebred Akita turns 12 years old this month.

honestly it depends on how well the owner takes care of the dog if he makes it to 15 that would be amazing .. jus keep up on his teeth excersise and diet

We were just talking about this at Christmas…my sister has a male short haired akita and a female long haired akita. Her female Akita is 10 years old and we were talking about her failing health. My sister told me that 10 is at the top end of the age limit for these beautiful dogs, so if your dog is 12, he is doing really well…
I hope this helped…
