Need Homeowner’s Insurance that doesn’t restrict dog breeds?

I realize this can vary from state to state (I happen to live in a state where this practice is allowed) and even agent to agent.
Please let me know if you’re aware of any home owner’s insurance companies that do not discriminate against particular dog breeds. We don’t have a dog yet, but plan to get one in the spring. Two of the breeds we’re most interested in, Husky & German Shepard, are on the list of dogs many insurances companies inaccurately consider dangerous.
I checked the AKC website, and it only gives tips on how to negotiate with the companies. Our current insurer told us they’d write the policy without mention of any dog, and told us to not inform them when we do get a dog (i.e. don’t ask, don’t tell). I’m not really comfortable with that, especially since our current agent is close to retirement.
On the rare chance you’re in my part of the world, this policy would be for the St. Louis area. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
I asked around my office too and it seems like State Farm has come out as the most recommended company for dog friendliness.

State Farm does not restrict dog breeds. I have also heard how great State Farm handles claims so I would check it out if I were you.
I have Allstate and they will cover you with any dog; however, if the dog is on “the list” you have to pay more.

Huskies and German Sheperds I wouldn’t worry about. Most of the stigma is on Pit Bulls.
I say talk to them straight up. ANd if they aren’t willing to work with you, take your business elsewhere.

I have Grange and they never even asked about pets!

Wow. I’ve never heard of that! California has no such restrictions, thank God. I had a pit bull! All I can say is shop around.

Your agent is attempting to commit fraud & should be reported to the state dept of insurance immediately. Also, why would you buy a dog breed which has a greater chance of injuring/maiming someone? Just ask them what breeds you can have that wouldn’t affect your rates. They aren’t discriminating against you or the dog, they are charging you for keeping a hazard in your home.

Many states have homeowners insurance companies that do this — but even without having a list in some states, they get away by calling whatever breed they don’t happen to like as ‘vicious’ – this is not at all restricted to Pit Bulls but can apply to any breed or non-breed of dog. It isn’t contengient upon the dog actually being ‘vicious’ in any way — I have dogs with no bite history – have never had any dog bite anyone – they are show dogs and are friendlier than most dogs as they allow strangers to open their mouths and count their teeth, and reach down all over their bodies as well as count their testicles — how they can consider these dogs ‘vicious’ is just idiotic. And yet, I can’t get homeowners insurance… State Farm no longer writes homeowners policies in my area and Allstate won’t write for owners of ‘vicious dogs’ and since I have Dobermans, that means I don’t get a policy. My mortgage company had to take out a policy that covers their interests but I am still without homeowners insurance because of my ‘vicious’ show dogs that are obedience trained and totally controlable – yet the guy next door with the little mix breed mutt that will bite and does bite everyone and everything, he has homeowners because no one has prosecuted his dog for being vicious. Go figure. This is going to become more and more common as well — I have seen in increasing the past few decades. Working in the ER the most bites I see are from little snappy unstable dogs – family pets that have never had any training and are just torn up kid faces waiting to happen… yet they get homeowners insurance.
If State Farm still writes homeowners policies in your area, you can try them. Also Nationwide had a thing a while back about if the dog has a CGC on it, regardless of breed, they will write a policy.
Good luck.

Any dog can be aggressive, it has more to do with the way a dog is raised than the breed. I’m sure you agree with me there, but as far as insurance companies go, they just want to be aware of all the risks. I work for State Farm and we ask about dogs, but not usually about the breed unless the customer says something about it. If there is a liability risk, such as the dog having a bite history, make sure this is disclosed or they could cancel you and/or refuse to pay a claim pertaining to the dog biting someone or causing damage. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, and I think you’d agree with me there.
Check with your agent, they’re in business for making business and chances are they want to work with you to find a solution.
