No-Vacc/low-vacc dog owners using boarding kennels?

Topics: pet insurance plan | 2 Comments »By admin | March 11, 2010

How would you go about kennelling your dog if you are going on holiday when all boarding kennels have to request the dogs are vaccinated otherwise they are not covered by their insurance? (At least in the UK) Or do you all use pet-sitters/friends instead?
Itoya – thank you for at least answering but please read the question properly – I KNOW why kennels require vaccinating – I am a quaified Veterinary Nurse – I am asking the owners that don’t what do they do as it is something I have considered.

I can’t speak for all kennels I can only speak for the Kennel I work for. We’ll take the dog, but you HAVE to pay for the dog to go next door to get vaccinated. Vaccinations are more of a precaution for the population of kenneled dogs. If canine cough(canine influenza) was to happen, then there’s a strong possibility that that kennel will shut down temporarily. Just like the Flu for us canine cough is contagious, and whether or not they have the vaccine they can still get it if an infected dog comes into the population coughing. Other vaccines like rabies is a precaution for the employees. As you may or may not know Rabies is contagious if bitten. The reason they don’t cover an unvaccinated dog under their insurance is becuase a number of things can happen to an unvaccinated dog(such as the examples given above). It’ll most likely cost more for that kennel to care for an unvaccinated dog with kennel cough than it would if the dog had the vaccine already(the only cost would be a week of antibiotics vs. the shot, and meds, and whatever else is associated with it).

Ask if they will take titre levels instead. If the levels are shown to be high enough to provide immunity then the dog shouldn’t need vaccinating.
